Shatavari
Shatavari is in the wild asparagus family, hence its botanical name of asparagus racemosus. It is the herb of choice in Ayurveda when it comes to the female reproductive system.
The name Shatavari is derived from the words ‘shat var’ (hundred husbands in Sanskrit) alluding to the fact that the herb rejuvenates and strengthens the female reproductive system. It was not only in the East that the herb was venerated. Pliny the Elder, a Roman author, naturalist and natural philosopher had this to say about this herb, ‘Asparagus, of all the plants of the garden, receives the most praiseworthy care’.
As an herbal supplement, shatavari provides the phytoestrogens that may help in restoring the hormonal balance in women, an important factor in managing pre-menstrual syndrome and menopausal changes. Shatavari is also a galactagogue (increases quantity of milk) providing breast health support post-delivery, along with supporting and rejuvenating the body as a whole.
